Royal Caribbean has officially welcomed its third Icon Class ship, Legend of the Seas, into its fleet, marking one of the most significant moments in the cruise industry this year. The vessel was handed over by the Meyer Turku shipyard in Turku, Finland, in June, 2026, becoming the 30th ship in Royal Caribbean's fleet and the newest title holder for the world's largest cruise ship in service.
More than 1,200 crew members, shipyard staff, and industry partners gathered in Finland for the delivery ceremony, which was led by Royal Caribbean Group Chairman and CEO Jason Liberty, Royal Caribbean International President and CEO Michael Bayley, and Meyer Turku CEO Casimir Lindholm. For North American travelers, the arrival of Legend of the Seas opens up a new tier of European cruising that no ship of this scale has offered before.
The World's Largest Cruise Ship, Now Sailing Europe
Legend of the Seas measures approximately 250,800 gross tons and stretches roughly 1,197 feet in length, making it marginally larger than its Icon Class predecessors, Icon of the Seas (2024) and Star of the Seas (2025). At full capacity the ship can accommodate up to 7,000 guests, with a double-occupancy count of 5,610 passengers. The crew complement stands at 2,350.
What makes this debut particularly significant for the cruise industry is that Legend of the Seas is the first Icon Class ship to homeport in Europe for its inaugural season. The two previous Icon ships both launched from U.S. ports. For the first time, travelers in Europe and those flying in from North America can experience Royal Caribbean's most advanced and largest ship without a transatlantic repositioning cruise first.
Jason Liberty captured the moment in a statement made at the delivery ceremony: he described the handover as another important milestone in the company's ongoing effort to redefine what a vacation at sea can be, and acknowledged the years of planning, engineering, and collaboration that made the ship possible.
What Is New and Different Aboard Legend of the Seas
Icon Class ships are already known for their distinctive neighborhoods, large-scale entertainment, and onboard variety. Legend of the Seas carries all of those hallmarks forward while introducing several new features designed to distinguish it from its sister ships.
New Dining Concepts
The specialty supper club format that appears across the Icon Class fleet has been reimagined for Legend as Hollywoodland Supper Club, themed around the glamour of Hollywood's golden era in the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. The AquaDome Market food hall introduces several new stalls alongside returning favorites: Seoulmate, La Española, Simply Pressed, and Adobo join the returning Crème de la Crêpe, which originally debuted on Icon of the Seas. The ship also debuts Royal Railway: Legend Station, an immersive dining experience that takes guests on a journey themed around train travel through different destinations. In total, Legend of the Seas offers 28 dining options, the most of any cruise ship at sea.
Entertainment and Onboard Experiences
The Royal Theater aboard Legend of the Seas will feature a Broadway-style production of Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, one of the most anticipated onboard entertainment debuts of the 2026 cruise season. The AquaTheater and Absolute Zero ice rink round out the entertainment lineup with updated programming. The ship also introduces America's Got Talent LIVE as a signature entertainment concept, bringing the television competition format to the at-sea stage.
Seven pools, the largest waterpark at sea, and the eight-neighborhood layout familiar from Icon and Star of the Seas give families and groups a range of ways to structure their days on board.
A Name With History
Legend of the Seas carries a name that Royal Caribbean has used before. The original Legend of the Seas, a Vision Class ship, launched in 1995 and served the fleet until 2017, when it was sold to Marella Cruises and renamed Marella Discovery 2. Reviving the name for the line's newest and largest ship is a deliberate nod to Royal Caribbean's history while pointing toward the future.
LNG Power and the Road to Net-Zero
Legend of the Seas is the fourth ship in Royal Caribbean's fleet to be powered by liquefied natural gas, joining Icon of the Seas, Star of the Seas, and Utopia of the Seas. LNG propulsion virtually eliminates sulfur oxide and particulate matter emissions, and reduces nitrogen oxide and carbon dioxide output compared to conventional heavy marine fuel. The ship also incorporates waste heat recovery systems and shore power connection capability, both of which contribute to lower operational emissions in port.
Royal Caribbean Group has set a target of achieving a net-zero cruise ship by 2035. Legend of the Seas represents the current leading edge of that commitment, built to comply with the International Maritime Organization's environmental guidelines and the European Union's Fit for 55 climate targets. A long-term construction agreement between Royal Caribbean and Meyer Turku extends through 2036, with additional Icon Class ships scheduled for delivery in 2028, 2029, and 2030. The next ship in the series, Hero of the Seas, is expected to debut in 2027.
